Poor's Land Charity

There is a small but very old charity in the parish which dates back to the Inclosure Acts of 1820. It covers the Ancient Liberty of Eye and Dunsden, which in those days (and still does) includes both Eye and Dunsden and Sonning Common civil parishes. This is the Poor's Land charity which was originally founded to provide fuel for persons resident in the area in cases of need or distress. This is what it still does (interpreting 'fuel' in a wide sense), and its scope has extended to making a small distribution to applicant pensioners at Christmas time. Its sole income comes from renting out a plot of land at Gallowstree Common. Residents of Sonning Common will recognise part of it as their Parish allotments. The approximate total available funds at any time amount to some £4500, so grants cannot be very large.

At present, the Clerk is Derek Hepburn. Contact can also be made through the Trustees, one of whom is Parish Councillor Chris Jensen.
